How To Make Anime Backgrounds In Photoshop

anime tree tutorial
I blog about my research on Makoto Shinkai's (新海誠) style background painting and seems like lots of Shinkai fans beloved information technology. So, here is a new writeup. Hopefully information technology will be more useful than the quondam tutorial.

Original Photograph

Browsing through my photo gallery, I institute this hallway photograph which is perfect for showing how Makoto Shinkai using layers for shadow.

Separating The Foreground From Background

The first thing I commonly do is to remove the background (heaven) from the foreground object. Depending on your artwork, you might demand to mask dissimilar objects into different layers. This will greatly assist on painting and animation later on.

crop
It is also better to apply a mask to crop out the object instead of erasing the paradigm directly. With mask, you can crop with brush(B) and eraser(Due east), instead of clicking disengage all the time.

Since I only need the hallway in my artwork, so I but have 1 layer and I move information technology slightly to the left to requite more space for background.

Pigment Over

Afterwards separating the hallway into it own layer, I added in the missing surface area with a hard round brush. Lock layer transparency (so y'all wont paint on transparent area) and start painting over the layer to requite it a more than painterly feel.

Foto paint over
You can also utilise the "remove noise" filter, to remove noise and image pinch artifact from the photo. Only call back, the foto pigment over procedure is an ongoing procedure and you will revisit this as you work on the paradigm more.

Sky

Add a new layer behind the hallway layer. Commencement painting the sky with a soft round border brush. You lot can utilise the gradient tool equally well, only I prefer painting it manually to give it a painting feel.

Foto paint over
I strongly recommend utilize color reference for this step (unless you lot are already a pro, which in this case you shouldn't be reading this noob tutorial at all)

Painting Sky
These are some photos I took with my photographic camera phone. Every bit y'all can see, the colors are already quite saturated and perfect for animation background.

Cloud

Painting clouds are non like shooting fish in a barrel. Makoto Shinkai tin utilize two or 3 seconds to paint a squeamish looking deject, while nosotros noob spend two hours on a cloud and it still look similar crap. Of course we can cheat with pasting photo similar how I did last time. But if we really want to amend, we volition need to go on on painting.

Painting Cloud
In my artwork, I use these two default brush from photoshop. Circular castor with "other dynamic" on and "castor tip hardness" lower downward. Use for cartoon base cloud shape and blending. Chalk castor. Employ for "erasing" part of the cloud.

  1. Depict a base cloud shape with the round castor.
  2. Delete function of the cloud with the chalk brush.
  3. Lock layer transparency. Lower down the round castor opacity and alloy in another colour.
  4. Use the round castor to paint the petty deject. Play with brush size jitter and scattering selection equally well.

Only with these ii castor, nosotros came out with a non so bad looking deject. Imagine if you are using custom castor, the result will exist even improve!

Randomness
The key of cloud painting is "randomness". Random in cloud shape and random in cloud placement, so it will look natural and not too organize or symmetry. Unfortunately, cloud painting is non something I had excel with. Probably we need to go out and wait at the heaven more =).

Shadow Layer

I want the shadow to exist case from where we are looking at, so I add a new layer and start painting with light blue/cyan/purple (cold) colour.

Painting Shadow
Put this layer on pinnacle of the hallway layer, and set the blend mode to "multiply". Now you tin see why I remove the existent shadow from the photo, else we going to cease up with two different shadows casting in different direction.

Painting Shadow

Grass, Trees, Bushes

Painting copse, bushes are similar with painting deject. The main differences are using dissimilar type of brush. The paradigm above shown some of the custom brush I made. Yous should be able to create your ain custom castor easily either past using photo or manually drawing the leaves shape. Remember to change the option for "Shape Dynamic", "Scattering" and "Jittering" likewise.

Painting Trees

  1. Draw the base shape with the custom leaf brush.
  2. Lock layer transparency. Lower down the round brush opacity and blend in another colour.
  3. Color pick the blended colour and pigment once again.

Painting Trees Painting Trees
With a custom "leaf/bush" await brush, you tin paint all these quite fast. Remember to make utilise of layer besides, then changes can be done on unlike object easily.

Distance Building

Altitude edifice are quite easy to paint. Simply make certain to employ the transform function, and "SHIFT" fundamental.

Painting Distance Building Painting Distance Building

  1. Add together new layer, draw the edifice details (window) in front end view. Use "SHIFT" Cardinal to draw/erase in direct line.
  2. "CTRL T" to transform the shape into the perspective you lot desire.
  3. Duplicate the shape layer and merge them to the edifice layer.

Some other things to remember is, since distance objects are already locate far away, and so the colors tin can be simplify into unproblematic shades.

More than Objects to The Scene

I want to populate the scene with more objects, so I open up Blender3D and render a few 3D models that I always use. This does not mean you lot need to larn 3D to do groundwork fine art, yous merely demand to take enough library/stocks of assets which you can reuse easily, and information technology tin can be in vector or 2d images.

Atmospheric Outcome

Atmospheric effects are essential to make your painting more belieavable. To add together Mist. Use the soft round edge brush to paint the mist. Layer blending way can be left as default/normal, as nosotros dont desire information technology to glow or darken the surface area.

Mist
To add specular / calorie-free reflection. Draw some specular/highlight line along bevel area. Pigment the floor with a warm color and set the blending way to "screen", so information technology look similar the flooring are reflecting some lights from the sunday.

light effect
To add glow effect. Add new layer, utilize the soft round edge brush to paint the glowing area (light source). Change the blending mode to addictive way like "Screen" or "linear dodge(add)".

glow effect Mist
This is the last artwork which I spend the whole afternoon painting it.
